The Square Tower, historic event venue, Old Portsmouth.

Square Tower Flag Raising Ceremony - August 29th 2011.

A flag raising ceremony was held at the Square Tower, Old Portsmouth, on the 29th August 2011, to unveil the stunning new flags to be flown from the rooftop of the tower.

The 2 new flags, a custom-made English Standard (three lions) and a new Portsmouth flag depicting the Portsmouth Coat of Arms, the famous Star and Cresent, were specially made for the Square Tower by local resident and Royal tailor, Keith Levitt.

As well as making the Royal Household's liveried costumes, Keith has made costumes for films of Nelson and is a resident of Portsmouth and a passionate flag-maker and flyer.

The ceremony was attended by the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Cllr Cheryl Buggy and Leader of Portsmouth City Council who unfurled the new flags, which performed beautifully helped by the near perfect weather conditions. Continues below.......

Speaking about the creation of the new flags, Steve Hender manager of the Square Tower said, "I was already working with Keith and it occurred to me that a great way to show my pride in the city would be literally to fly the flag for Portsmouth and England! Visitors entering the city by sea and local residents will be able to see not only the Three Lions but the Portsmouth flag, too. I hope it will go some way to restoring a positive image of England, at home and abroad."

It is believed that the Square Tower at Old Portsmouth is the only location on the south coast of England that currently flies the English Standard flag.

After the event a delicious tea was served in the Square Tower's own Vintage Tearoom.
